Home Haus Reims Anniversary Rhein Cruise Garmisch Oktoberfest

Anita and I spent our first anniversary at a castle overlooking the Rhein

Anita points to Burg Gutenfels from across the river.

Burg Gutenfels is several hundred years old, and overlooks the village of Kaub.

The castle withstood a long siege in the Middle Ages, hence the name "Gutenfels", which translates to

"Good and/or Strong Rock".

Anita on the castle terrace.

The "Pfalz" was built to collect tolls from passing ships.

The "Rhein Fahre" (Ferry) between St. Goar and St. Goarhausen.  Along the "scenic" stretch of the Rhein, there are no bridges - only ferrys.

Above St. Goar lies the ruin of one of the largest Rhein castles, Burg Rheinfels.  It was destroyed by Napolean.

Anita looks over the Rhein from Burg Rheinfels.

There is a museum inside the castle, and the burg holds music performances in the ruins.

A narrow street in the village of St. Goar.

We saw the local Hunting Club's annual "Schutzenfest Parade" in St. Goar...

... complete with the official Hunt Club Flag, dating from the 1800s.
